Keep the Change, don’t support panhandling.
Recently the City of Beaumont has received an increase in panhandlers in our shopping centers, restaurants, roadways and freeway off ramps. This influx is partially due to the great support that they receive from the citizens of our city. If they are able to receive money by soliciting, they will continue to grow in numbers which increases issues.
Panhandling causes several issues.
- Disorderly conduct of public inebriates
- Disorderly conduct of transients
- Harassment and intimidation
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Violent and Sexual crimes
- Distracted drivers/ accidents
- Increase in trash/ debris
- Business loss
It is not illegal to solicit people for money (Aggressive Panhandling is a violation of law), but anyone who feels threatened, annoyed, or intimidated should call the police as soon as possible. Give a description of the panhandler, location it occurred, time of occurrence, the direction of travel when the panhandler left and be willing to assist the police with prosecution if necessary.
The City of Beaumont and the County of Riverside has several resources to help those in need. If you would like to donate, please give to those organizations that assist with homelessness. Make your donations count. To locate an organization, please contact the County of Riverside or visit http://www.homelessresourcesca.org or call 2-1-1.
