This scam has been around since at least 2016, but recently came to the attention of Beaumont PD. Scammers are getting more and more crafty, even resorting to mailing fraudulent letters that look like they are coming from the California State Controller’s Office. Thankfully an astute resident researched the information provided on the letter, determined that it was a scam and reported it to the Beaumont Police Department. Take a look at the attached letter and envelope to see how “authentic” this scam could seem to an unsuspecting victim.
 
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so don’t get taken in by scams such as these. The state will never 
ask people to provide personal information to a call-in number or charge a fee to return unclaimed property.  Anyone can search for property in their name, and they may claim it directly from the Controller’s Office without going through a third party. For more information on this scam visit:
