Program Background
The Police Department has examined the concept of issuing Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) licenses to Beaumont residents who meet the strict requirements set forth in the Government Code. Since 2015, the Chief of Police has reserved the right to issue CCW licenses; however, the practice of issuing CCW licenses has consistently been referred to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Reason for Deferring Issuance of CCW Licenses
The reason for the deferment to the Sheriff’s department centered exclusively on the lack of police department staff to process applicants to include the comprehensive background check. The Police Chief believes Beaumont residents should have the ability to protect themselves with the option to legally and responsibly carry a concealed firearm.
The Police Department began looking at creative ways in which the Department could provide this service without it being labor intensive with existing staff. It was determined that outsourcing the background portion of the CCW license process would save staff time, and would be an efficient way to process CCW requests. The Department determined if:
- The CCW license process could be completed in a reasonable amount of time.
- If the overall cost for CCW issuance would be affordable for residents of Beaumont.
- Would the program be cost neutral for the City of Beaumont.
The Department concluded that the average time to process a CCW license would be 2 to 3 months, and the estimated total cost for the CCW applicants would not exceed $900, but may vary.
Goal in Deferring the Process
The Police Chief’s goal with the Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) License Program is to provide this service to the citizens of Beaumont, while in turn reducing the CCW licensing and workload responsibilities for our partners with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Beaumont residents can still choose to apply with either the Beaumont Police Department or the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department for their CCW licensing needs.
The Beaumont Police Department is pleased to offer this service to the citizens of Beaumont as a tool for personal protection and with the overall goal for increased public safety.
