The Beaumont Police Department Welcomes K9 Murph and Officer Crews

Beaumont, CA - The Beaumont Police Department is excited to announce we have expanded our Police Canine Program. The Beaumont City Council approved a proposal in April of 2021 to expand the Beaumont Police Department’s Canine Program, to include a patrol/detection canine. In 2016, the Beaumont Police Department implemented a detection canine program with the addition of K9 Mila and the appointment of K9 Handler Corporal Brieda. Corporal Brieda and K9 Mila have proven to be a vital asset, both locally and regionally.

The expansion of our canine program to add a patrol canine allows the opportunity to effectively increase a tried and trusted means to expand non-lethal options when actively engaging suspects. A patrol/detection canine will assist the department in four categories including, suspect apprehension, suspect tracking, narcotic detection, and community involvement.  Some of the benefits of having a patrol/detection canine include: citizen and officer safety, increasing likelihood of suspect apprehension, reducing the need to resort to deadly force, ability to track fleeing suspects and detect narcotics that can lead to the increase in arrests and convictions.

Another benefit of the canine program includes the ability to partner with our community to support our K9 Officers. Canines are a positive tool for community policing as they draw attention and build positive relationships between the police department and our citizens.  Currently, the Beaumont Police Department offers a K9 Fundraising program, which offers the community a means to be active partners in the program. A few ways to donate to our program include purchasing K9 Unit Merchandise, adding a donation amount when you purchase or renew your City of Beaumont pet license, or any of our other organized fundraising events.

Today, we would like to officially announce the addition of K9 Murph to the Beaumont Police Department! K9 Murph is a Belgian Malinois from Grashoek, Netherlands. He was born April 15, 2020, and officially joined the Beaumont Police Department on patrol this week! Officer Crews is K9 Murph’s handler, Officer Crews has been with the Beaumont Police Department since 2016, he’s worked patrol and the Gang Impact Team, but now joins the K9 Unit, working with K9 Murph, as well as Corporal Brieda and K9 Mila. We welcome K9 Murph to Beaumont and are excited to have this new K9 team out on patrol!
