The Pennsylvania Avenue Grade Separation Project is located just south of the I-10 Freeway at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) crossing. This project will eliminate a dangerous at-grade rail crossing and replace it with a grade-separated underpass, preserving a four-lane roadway and adding sidewalks for pedestrian safety. The project also adds new traffic signals at the I-10 ramp intersections and widens the eastbound on-ramp to enhance safety and provide a vehicle pullout.
This project will provide several important benefits to our community, improving safety, reducing congestion, and allowing for more connectivity. Safety will be greatly improved by removing the risk of accidents between trains and cars, bikes, or pedestrians. This improvement will also help emergency vehicles respond faster by eliminating delays caused by passing trains. Traffic will flow more smoothly, especially during busy times of the day, since drivers won’t have to stop and wait at the crossing. Local businesses and property owners may also benefit, as better traffic flow and less train noise can help increase property values and attract new business. Reducing vehicle idling time will cut down on emissions and noise, helping to keep our air cleaner and our neighborhoods quieter.
